School Calendar for 2025-2026 (updated 22nd September 2025)

In Kilcommon N.S. we recognise that parents/guardians are the primary educators and that co-operation between the parents/guardians and the school is essential in order for children to reach their full potential.

Parents’ Association
Kilcommon NS has a Parents’ Association which provides much appreciated support to the school. All parents are automatically members of the Parents’ Association and are welcome to attend meetings. There are presently five members on the committee of the Parents’ Association.

Alex Johnson – Chairperson, Lisa Gilmartin – Treasurer, Catherine Hickey: Secretary, Michelle O’ Sullivan, Molly Doherty, Nicole Ryan.
New committee members are always welcome.

The Parents’ Association make suggestions for school activities. They make it possible to run events such as Grandparents’ Day by organising refreshments. They also fundraise to support school activities such as transport to swimming lessons; transport for school trips; and treats for special occasion such as Halloween. Having an active parents’ association hugely benefits the children and the school and contributes to the welcoming atmosphere we try to provide.

The School Day
School begins at 9:20am.
The school is open to receive children from 9:00 am and children are supervised in their classrooms from that time. School finishes at 2pm for children in junior and senior infants and at 3:00pm for children from 1st to 6th classes.
Please note that children in junior infants have a reduced school day finishing at 12:00 for a week or so at the beginning of the school year.
We encourage parents/guardians to make sure that children attend school punctually each day. We have a Statement of Strategy on School attendance which is available on our website.

School Uniform
We changed our school uniform in 2023. We now have a school tracksuit which is worn by the children each day.
The tracksuit can be ordered directly from the supplier Balon Sports at www.balondirect.com.

Healthy Lunches
The school offers a hot school lunch each day which is free for all children. This is government funded initiative to provide nutritious hot meals to all primary school children.

In Kilcommon NS, our supplier is The Lunch Bag based in Nenagh. See the link for further information: The Lunch Bag

The school has a healthy eating policy which can be seen in the Policies Page. We ask parents/guardians to send only healthy food and drink with your children each day.
Treats such as chocolate, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks should be reserved for special occasions only and are not normally allowed at lunch time.

Homework
We believe that homework is useful to reinforce what the children have learned in school and to provide a link between school and home. We also see it as developing the child’s concentration skills and in promoting independent learning over time.
Homework is normally given to all children from Monday to Thursday each week. Homework may contain reading, written tasks, items to be learned, drawing, colouring, collecting information and finishing work started in class.
The teacher writes homework tasks for children in infants. Children in 1st to 6th classes have a homework diary where they write down their own homework each day.
Parents are invited to communicate with teachers about homework when the child cannot do it for any reason or if it is taking too long. Homework is not intended to be a cause of stress and it should not take a very long time. Children in the junior classroom should not need to spend longer than about 20 minutes on homework each night and children in the senior classroom no more than 30 minutes. Ideally homework should be done before any screen time, soon after school.

Code of Behaviour and School Rules
Our school has a Code of Behaviour and a copy of this is included in the registration pack for new families. It is also available on the policies page of this website. The School Rules are included as part of the Code of Behaviour.
