Green School
Green-Schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools.

The Green Schools programme promotes long-term, whole-school action for the environment. The programme is operated and coordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce. The Green-Schools’ mission is to protect planet Earth – our shared home to which we all belong – and they want everyone involved. Kilcommon N.S. is proud to be a Green School and we are the proud possessor of 7 green flags.
Our most recent flag was our 7th Green Flag which we attained in 2025. It is for Global Citizenship Energy.
As part of the work to attain this flag the children learned more about renewable energy and the impact of fossil fuels on climate change. They had a workshop from SEAI facilitator Hans who did lots of hands-on activities with the children. To celebrate winning our 7th flag, the whole school visited Ardnacrusha Hydroelectricity Power Station, Ireland’s oldest source of renewable electricity.

As part of the work to attain our 6th green flag The Parents’ Association bought us a set of reusable beakers, plates and cutlery so we would no longer need to use disposables. We still get great use out of these.
The children really enjoyed working to promoting diversity in our school grounds. We have a wild flower garden where we encourage the growth of wild flowers which provide food for insects like butterflies. In 2025 we sowed more wild flower seeds there with help from Josie Ryan and Sandra Poyser of Kilcommon Tidy Towns and also joined in with planting herbs in the village.
